Galbanum is a large perennial herb with a smooth stem, shiny leaflets and small flowers. It contains resin ducts which exude a milky juice, a natural oleoresin. The dried resinous exudation is collected by making incisions at the base of the stem.

The essential oil is produced through water or steam distillation from the oleoresin or gum – only the Levant or soft type is used for oil production.

Galbanum essential oil is a colourless or pale yellow or olive liquid with a fresh green top note and a woody-dry balsamic undertone.
